Restrictions on the sale of Nicotine Pouches
Union health ministry issues an advisory refraining all the states and union territory governments for crackdown on the Oral nicotine pouches. The ministry cited the major health issue and burden on the health of people especially on the adolescents as this causes the addiction on chemicals and various other cardiovascular diseases are caused among youth. Globally popular brands are being widely sold illegally in the country, according to the surveys & the Health ministry. In India, where tobacco kills 1.35 million people a year, the government has banned e-cigarettes but approved certain nicotine replacements like patches and chewing gums.There is increased "availability of oral nicotine pouches through online and offline channels in the countryNicotine pouches - small packets placed under the lip that contain nicotine but no tobacco - remain illegal and unapproved, with a government source saying they are often smuggled into India for sale online and through local tobacco stores.An Indian agency done an investigation and found that Mumbai international airport's duty-free shops run by Private company breached the law by selling nicotine pouches.Although the company has denied wrongdoing, and an Indian court this week rejected the company's arguments that duty-free shops are immune from domestic laws.

India’s stand on Indus water treaty Suspension with Pakistan.
Pakistani prime minister Shahbaz sharif claimed Indus water treaty’s suspension is very critical and can be treated as an act of war. He also claimed that the move has no legal binding. He stated this in addressing 81st United Nations General assembly in New York. The treaty gave the India control of three eastern rives i.e Ravi, Beas and Sutlej and Pakistan is left with three western rivers i.e Indus, Jhelum and Chenab. This Treaty was signed on September 1960. Analysis: The Indus water Treaty was in temporary Suspension since April 2025, and India stated its stand that it will remain suspended till Pakistan ends its support to cross border terrorism. It supports about 80% of Pakistan’s agricultural backbone. So, revoking the suspension of Indus water treaty will be a big relief of starving Pakistan. India’s stand is very simple that any cooperation with cross border terrorism will be treated as an act of war and moreover India cleared its stand that the bilateral cooperation cannot work with terrorism. Crucial Dams of Pakistan like Mangla, Tarbela etc rely on Indus River for its hydroelectric power generation and they have an important share in Pakistan's electricity generation. Following this move from India, Pakistan is about to starve in its electricity generation and Agricultural activities so Pakistani PM is seeking the global cooperation in this issue.

New Amendment : The mines and minerals development and regulation amendment act 2026
The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026 was passed by Parliament on August 13, 2026, to set a uniform tax system and restrict state governments from levying independent taxes on mineral rights and mineral-bearing lands.Issue : The states are resisting this amendment as it aims to restrict the states from Mineral bearing land taxes. The opposition seen as the one of the major moves by the states as it cuts major revenue of the states. Major mineral producing states including Odisha, Jharkhand etc resisted this move as it cuts their major revenue base. Analysis: Financial burden is the main point on which states are opposing this amendment as also the land use by industries for mining are their major concerns as this will restrict their management. The Opposing states cite the recent ruling by Supreme court affirming the states to have inherent powers to imply taxes on minerals. This move is making hard for the investors as it creates the confusions for them. Major mineral and mining industries welcomed the move as this will relieve them from extra finance burden and will help in ease of doing business. This needs to be balanced with the financial autonomy of the union government with the fiscal burden of the states as it will impact the economy and minerals market and moreover directly impact the ease of doing business and trade balances.
